Driver Detective 6.5
Publisher: PC Drivers HeadQuarters
Pros: Driver Detective presents pretty accurate results and the scans are fast.
Cons: The interface is a bit confusing.
The verdict: Driver Detective is a good driver updater, but its interface makes it hard to navigate.
Driver Detective has a lot going for it, such as a good list of features and decent accuracy. One of its major drawbacks is an illogical interface that's hard to navigate at first. Instead of presenting the user with the homepage, Driver Detective scans the system first and only then goes to the homepage. Unfortunately, it's not immediately clear how to update the outdated drivers. In addition to a backward interface, we found that one of the suggested updates was a false positive.
Features: Driver Detective has all the necessary features a driver updater should have. It has a reliable scanning tool that has three matching options - Universal Match, OEM Match, and Motherboard Match. One of the features that we especially liked is EZ Migrator. This tool allows the user to burn all the drivers to a CD when migrating from one OS to another or doing an upgrade or a downgrade.
Ease of use: Driver Detective features are easy to use one by one, however the GUI is backward and confusing at first. This means that it requires getting used to before the program becomes comfortable to use. As it is, novice computer users will have a hard time working it all out.
Effectiveness: The scan was fast enough and detected several drivers we needed to update. We've inspected the results and were disappointed to discover that one was a false positive. This means that the software's scanning engine needs to be improved. Nevertheless, only one false positive is not too bad for a driver update application. The rest of the drivers detected by Driver Detective were essential, so the application did its job pretty well.
Help and Support: Driver Detective has very good support options. The developer can be reached in several different ways - via a website contact form, by phone, or by regular mail. Registered customers should always sign in before emailing Support, so that their emails are prioritized and answered within 24 hours.
Summary: Driver Detective is not the best driver updater, but it's still a decent program. Once its GUI and accuracy are improved, it could become the industry leader.
